El Torcal is an 11.7 km2 Nature Reserve with one of the most impressive limestone landscapes in the whole of Europe. Its stone shapes, which were formed on the seabed approximately 150 million years ago, give us a unique perspective of nature. Natural erosion has created the type of rocky elevation known in Spanish as “el tornillo” (the screw). There are at least 664 different plant species in the reserve, some of which are endemic. There are some 116 species of vertebrate animal life, including reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals. |
